1948 saw the continued evolution of the Ferrari 12-cylinder engine, designed by Colombo and perfected by Busso with another increase in cylinder capacity, which brought the overall engine capacity to two litres and that of a single cylinder to 166 cc, creating one of the best known types. Like the previous models, called the 125 C and 159 C, which were the versions with bodies which had motorcycle-style mudguards on the four wheels and lights, the 166 had these features and was illustrated in the early catalogues from the marque, advertising the model for participation in international races, with the two versions, Corsa (racing) and Sport, according to the required use and, as a result, depending whether or not the body had lights and mudguards. This happened in 1948, with the first examples, because the bodies were then definitively differentiated with the 166 F2 models, the first true single-seaters with a central steering wheel, the two-seater sports and even four-seater grand touring models, in many versions built by almost all of the major car-body builders of the time. |
