In a move harking back to a golden period of automotive history when manufacturing techniques allowed wealthy clients to commission highly customised bodywork for their Ferrari, Rolls Royce or Bentley, a handful of very special 456's received bespoke coachwork by Pininfarina. Every one of these 456 Speciale's (or 'Venice' as they are widely known) was individually commissioned by that most extravagant of collectors, the Sultan of Brunei. Indeed, several alternative body styles were made, Pininfarina producing Cabriolet's, Berlina's and Station Wagon's in this mini series of at least nine vehicles, each of which are reputed to have cost somewhere in the region of $1.5m to produce.

Much of the development work for these exquisite machines was undertaken by Italtecnica between 1995 and ’96, a company who will be familiar to Ferraristi for their more recent work on 550 Maranello GT racers. Indeed, all 456 Speciale's left the Ferrari factory as standard 456 GT and GTA's before being converted by Pininfarina who quite masterfully engineered and constructed these lavishly expensive machines. Exact details are sketchy though with only a couple of examples having left the Sultan's personal collection. Chassis 103190 was a five door 456 GTA Shooting Break finished in Forest Green Metallic over a pale green leather interior. With a wheelbase stretched by 200mm, incredible bodywork from the windscreen back, new front and rear seats along with several custom switchgear features, 103190 was completed in right-hand drive and as an automatic. Meanwhile, Pininfarina also completed red, yellow and grey Shooting Break's. Chassis 104023 though was a two seat Cabriolet finished in an identical Forest Green Metallic over pale green as 103190, many similar interior fixtures and fittings again being used. Pininfarina developed an electrically operated hood that folded flush beneath a body colour coded panel for this car but it's bulky tail treatment with a gently sloping trunk and four prominent rear lights compromised a nice concept. At least two other right-hand drive Cabriolet's were completed in silver and red while a blue over tan car with standard tail and left hand drive was also reputedly made. Several four door Berlina's were also built but we are currently putting a definitive chassis index together and hope to publish the findings before too long.

6 stationwagons for the sultan of Brunei, 1 went to another buyer.
